A generous crowd was on hand for the Awards Banquet, held at the TCU Student Center

Ballroom. ITG President Vince DiMartino welcomed everyone, and took a moment to thank the ITG members for a chance to serve them as ITG president for a second time. DiMartino then acknowledged the members of the Board of Directors and Jon Burgess, seated at the head table.

Jon Burgess took an opportunity to thank everyone responsible for making the conference such a tremendous success. Then DiMartino took a moment to acknowledge others, singling out the two recipients of the ITG Award of Merit in attendance: John Haynie and Leonard Candelaria. He then acknowledged the artists and sponsors, the exhibitors, the exhibit coordinators, and the ITG Past Presidents in attendance.

Competition Results

The awards for the 2003 Conference were then announced. Alan Siebert, Conference Competition Chair, individually introduced the chairs for each division. Wade Weast announced the 2003 ITG Scholarship winners, and they each received certificates and their scholarship money.

Jazz Competition

The chair of the jazz division, Tom Erdman, acknowledged the judges for the event. Michael Caldwell, John Harding, and Brad Goode served as preliminary judges, and John Thomas, Pat Harbison, and Carl Saunders as the finals judges. First place and a $1000 prize were awarded to Nathan Botts, a student of David Brown at Brigham Young University. Second place went to Adam Czerepinski, student of Laurie Frink at the Manhattan School of Music. In third place was Will Caviness, who studies with Jim Ketch at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Erdman praised the high level of the competitors, and the quality of the event.

Mock Orchestra Competition

James Ackley, chair of the Mock Orchestral Competition, also took a moment to praise all the participants, letting everyone know that there were no third place finishers. A three-way tie for second place was awarded. Those students were Adam Dickson, student of William Campbell at the University of Michigan; Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski, student of David Hickman at Arizona State University; and Matt Laird, student of Richard Stoelzel at Grand Valley State University. Taking first place was Brian Winegardner, who studies with William Campbell at the University of Michigan. Preliminary judges for the event included Jay Lichtmann, Roger Murtha, and Claire Newbold. The judges for the finals were Stanley Friedman, Frank Kadarabek, and Rob Roy McGregor.

Solo Competition

The winners of the 2003 Solo Competition were introduced b y the competition chair, Joseph Bowman. Bowman took a moment to comment on the extremely high level of the competitors and the truly international nature of the event. He acknowledged the judges hard work throughout: Robert Murray, Michael Arndt, and Lee Weimer in the preliminary round, and Jens Lindemann, Luis Engelke, Richard Stoelzel, and Stacy Blair in the finals. Awarded his second first place of the evening, and a $1000 prize, was Nathan Botts, student of David Brown at Brigham Young University. There was a tie for second place, with awards going to Goni Eshed, student of Ilan Eshed at the Tel-Aviv Academy of Music (Tel-Aviv, Isreal); and Gabor Komlossy, student of Frigyes Varasdy at the Liszt Ferenc Adademy of Music (Budapest, Hungary)

Honorary Award

Returning to the podium, Vince DiMartino announced the new recipient of the ITG Honorary Award, as voted on by the officers and Board of Directors. The award will be presented to legendary jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, at an event in the near future. Next, DiMartino presented conference host Jon Burgess with a plaque in recognition of his hard work and dedication in putting such a wonderful event together. This was followed by a round of applause for the hard work put in by Michael Anderson and Gary Mortenson with the ITG web team and the journal team.

As the banquet drew to a close, the traditional passing of the bugle occurred. Jon Burgess presented the bugle to Al Hood, host of the 2004 Conference at the University of Denver-Lamont School of Music in Denver, Colorado. In his closing remarks to those assembled, DiMartino spoke on the joys of being an ITG member. “We can make a difference in the coming year. Start at home, and make that a better place to live with your music.” Then he shared his wish that everyone meet again for what promises to be a wonderful 2004 ITG Conference in Denver next June 15-19.
