Presenter Biographies

Michael Anderson

Michael Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Music at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. At Dana he teaches Applied Trumpet, Musicianship, Aural Skills, Rock History, Jazz Appreciation and directs the Brass and Jazz Ensembles. He is Curriculum Coordinator of the Music Department and Director of the Liberal Arts Portfolio Program. Mr. Anderson is a long-time member of the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Omaha Brass Ensemble. Each summer Anderson serves on the faculty of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in west central Michigan. He was recently elected to a second 4-year term on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild and is the Chair of the ITG Technology Committee and Executive Director of the ITG Web Site. Recently, Anderson was selected to serve on the 12-member ITG Journal Editorial Committee.

At the 2000 ITG Conference in Purchase, NY, Mr. Anderson was presented with a Lifetime Membership Award by the ITG Board of Directors for his work as Project Manager for the ITG 25th Anniversary Journal Cd-rom. Anderson has been the director of the Conference Coverage on the ITG Web Site since it began in 1998. He has performed and/or presented at ten ITG Conferences.

Ian Balmain

Ian studied at the Royal College of Music with David Mason. His professional career began with a short period of freelancing in London before joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1984 as Co-Principal Trumpet. He later became Principal Trumpet and during this time was a regular soloist with the orchestra.

Following an invitation to play with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), Ian was offered the position of solo trumpet in 1997 and has remained there since.

In addition to this, Ian is a regular studio player appearing on many TV and film soundtracks and is also professor of trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music and the Trinity College of Music.

Mike Davison

Dr. Michael Davison holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Univ of Wisc-Whitewater, and the Univ of Wisc-Madison. Mike has been head of the jazz and brass programs at the Unversity of Richmond since 1986, and is presently the president of the Virginia chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators and on the Board of Directors of the National Trumpet Competition. Dr. Davison was also past chairman of the music education division of Mid-Atlantic CMS. Mike has performed as a member of the Whitewater Brass Quintet, Wisconsin Brass Quintet, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, both the Canadian and Empire Brass Quintets and presently performing as third trumpet with the Richmond Symphony. In addition, Dr. Davison has performed with such artists as Michael Brecker, Curtis Fuller, Christian McBride, Chris Vadala, Gene Bertoncini, The Temptations and Aretha Franklin. Dr. Davison has performed for Pope John Paul and played recitals in St. Patrick’s Cathedral and St. Thomas Church in NY City. He has recorded numerous albums in both the jazz and classical genres. As an author, Dr. Davison has written two transcriptions books on trumpeter Randy Brecker with Hal Leonard Pub. Co., and Warner Bros. Inc. Mike has also authored many articles for Down Beat magazine, the International Trumpet Guild Journal, the Jazz Educators Journal and G.I.A. Quarterly. Mike has also published numerous jazz combo compositions with Walrus Music Publishing®. Presently, Mike is writing and presenting seminars on conditioning and motivation; his article “The Life and Times of John Czlabotnik: A Music Journey,” has appeared in “Fanfare,” a tabloid sent to every college and high school band in the country. Mike has lead a group of jazz educators to South Africa, music educators to China and taught in Lyon, France, at A.I.M.R.A., the French international jazz school. Since 1987, Mike has been on the trumpet faculty at the International Arts Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Dr. Davison is a clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company® and in great demand throughout the country as a classical and jazz teacher and performer. Mike is also sought after as a performer and clinician on the Akai Electric Valve Instrument. Dr. Davison is active in the International Trumpet Guild, and has performed at the last 11 ITG conferences. Dr. Davison was the host of the 1999 ITG Conference in Richmond, VA, from May 19 - 22, 1999.

Since 1986, Dr. Michael Davison has been head of the jazz program at the Unversity of Richmond. Rich Illman

Rich Illman is Professor of Trumpet at Michigan State University and has been the faculty sponsor of the Michigan State University Yoga Club since 1990. He has also taught at Eastern Kentucky University, the University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, and Asbury College .

Mr. Illman has had a wide variety of playing experiences. Currently he is one of the solo cornets with the Brass Band of Battle Creek and was a featured soloist on their first and third CDs as well as one of the trumpets, along with Vince DiMartino, in the Millennium Brass Quintet. He is also First Trumpet in the Beaumont Brass Quintet, Principal Trumpet with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Lead Trumpet with the Lansing Symphony Big Band, and First Trumpet with the Lansing Symphony Brass Quintet, performing all around the state of Michigan with those groups.

As Professor of Trumpet at Michigan State University, Mr. Illman has been featured soloist with the MSU Alumni Band on their last three European tours.He was principal trumpet of the Lexington Philharmonic for eighteen years. Having played lead trumpet in a Lexington Big Band for fourteen years, he has also performed in backup bands for Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Burt Bacharach, Bob Hope, and rock groups such as the Fifth Dimemsion, Martha and the Vandellas, and the Spinners.

In an effort to keep up with modern technology, Mr. Illman uses synthesizers and other electronic devices both in his studio teaching and on numerous solo recitals with Frank Ell, Professor of Clarinet at MSU, in a program entitled “Music and Technology”. He has also formed a MIDI ensemble which presents multi-media concerts in planetariums.

Jo Martinie

Jo Martinie received her yoga instructor certification from Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, MA in 1996 and has been teaching yoga classes to people of varying ages, differing abilities, and physical conditions ever since. Her classes have included ones for senior citizens, women with breast cancer, faculty, staff and students of Michigan State University and general, community education. She teaches a gentle, mindful approach to yoga with emphasis on breath awareness, body alignment, safe stretching, and fun.

Phil Norris

Dr. Phil Norris is a native of Pennsylvania and has taught at Northwestern College, St. Paul, Minnesota, since the Fall of 1993. He teaches courses in instrumental music education, music theory, trumpet, music technology, and music history.

Dr. Norris studied at Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana, (music education) and at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, (trumpet performance, band conducting, and instrumental pedagogy). In 1998 he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance at the University of Minnesota where he studied with David Baldwin and Gary Bordner.

As a writer, Dr. Norris has published over 25 band and brass pieces with Volkwein, Columbia Pictures Publications, and David E. Smith Publishers. In 1997, Crown Music Press in Chicago published his Top 50 Orchestral Audition Excerpts for Trumpet. An album of 10 original wedding-ceremonial works for trumpet and organ to be released later this year.

As a performer, Dr. Norris is an active soloist with ensembles of all types. He is also an accomplished studio player with numerous commercial and album recordings to his credit. In addition, he has performed with symphony orchestras (Salem, OR and Alexandria, VA), the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and was principal trumpet of the Clarion Brass Quintet of Washington, D.C.

Dr. Norris frequently publishes articles on wind instrument pedagogy. For state, national and international conferences, including the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, he has presented clinics in band and brass techniques, wind respiration, wind and percussion pedagogy, and arranging. His article on player perception of tone was published in the ITG Journal in January 2002 issue.

R. Dale Olson

"R. Dale Olson has been referred to as one of the foremost authorities in the world in the fields of trumpet design, testing, and performance. From 1961 through 1968 he served as Director of Research for the firm of F.E. Olds and Son, Inc. of Fullerton, California, and has acted as consultant to several major firms.

Olson holds a Bachelors Degree in music education and a Masters in trumpet performance from the University of North Texas, and an M.A. in experimental psychology from California State University, Fullerton. His trumpet teachers were Everrett James (father of Harry James), John J. Haynie, Renold Schilke, John Clyman, and Vladimir Drucker.

Olson has worked with acousticians Robert W. Young and William T. Cardwell, Jr. in the field of trumpet design. In additional to numerous articles on brass performance, Olson is the author of the book, Sensory Evaluation of Brass Musical Instruments .

R. Dale Olson is retired fro professional performance, but continues research and writing in the field. He is active in the restoration of historic properties on Galveston Island, Texas, is a foremost authority on Texas Gulf Coast history and the privateer, Jean Laffite, and maintains a collection of vintage English automobiles."

Richard Smith

Richard Smith wrote a doctoral thesis on trumpet acoustics before joining Boosey and Hawkes, where he worked for 12 years as chief designer and technical manager responsible for the world famous Besson brass range. He designed several Besson Sovereign instruments, including the original trumpets used by Derek Watkins and John Wallace, trombones for Roy Williams and Don Lusher, and the cornets used by most brass and military bands. His research work into acoustics, testing and development of brass instruments has been widely published in the scientific literature and on TV and radio, and he has travelled in Europe, the United States and Japan, testing instruments with top professional symphonic and session players.

He now applies his broad experience to the design of bespoke brass instruments for individual players, and is a competent musician who regularly plays contra-bassoon in London.
