Recital: Ellsworth 2nd Place Winner,
David Guerrier
1:30 p.m. Wheeler Concert Hall
Kathryn Fouse, piano

Gary Mortenson, Reporter
Ellsworth Smith Competition 2nd place winner, David Guerrier, a native of Drome, France, performed what can only be described as an astonishing recital displaying a level of maturity far exceeding his years (sixteen). For an accomplished performer of any age a program including the Honegger Intrada, the Françaix Sonatine, Legende by Enesco, Concertino by Delerue, and the Arutunian Concerto is a daunting program. For a student who would be a junior in an American high school, this program was nothing short of remarkable. Guerrier has been no stranger to recent ITG conferences. In 1999 he won the ITG Mock Orchestra Audition in Richmond, Virginia, and in 2000 he won the ITG Solo Contest held at Purchase in New York.

Quite simply David Guerrier has a gift of communication. This observation goes well beyond his flawless technique and his steady rhythmic sense. Throughout the recital he was able to transcend the notes on the page and to speak to his audience on a variety of levels. This came through in understated, lyrical ways in the slow sections of the Arutunian and the Sarabande of the Français. Guerrier’s technical prowess came through in the Honneger, Enesco and Arutunian. This artistry included a mastery of multiple tonguing techniques, pitch accuracy, flawless intonation and a rhythmic capacity that was nothing short of outstanding. Throughout the entire recital his tone quality was clear, and beautifully focused. Gurrier received a well-deserved standing ovation at the conclusion of the Arutunian, and returned to the stage twice to perform encores including one of the fastest Goedicke Concert Etudes this reporter can remember!

Of special note in this performance was the outstanding accompaniment provided by Dr. Kathryn Fouse on piano. Together these two exceptional musicians were able to take us to a realm seldom attained in performance. We can only hope that David Guerrier will continue to return and to enrich us with his highly sensitive interpretations as his repertoire expands, and has he matures to even greater heights.
