ITG Banquet and Presentations
5:30 p.m. Ballroom A, The Centre

Cozy Baker, Reporter
After a fulfilling few days of trumpet, cornet, piccolo et al., the time arrived to sit down to celebrate with food and frills at the banquet. It was Dr. Timothy Zifer’s last evening in the spotlight as host, and he proudly spoke of the honor. If the worst snafu of ITG ’01 could be called the ill-timed flashing of ballroom lights during speeches, then Zifer’s watch as ITG Conference host should be acclaimed as a triumphant success. In conclusion Zifer stated, “I have been humbled by the entire experience.”

Zifer acknowledged the contributions of many behind the scenes volunteers. He thanked his students including those who were still actively tearing down the conference facilities. All of the ITG committee chairs were congratulated along with, exhibit coordinators, and all of the volunteers who make various aspects of the conference possible. A highlight was the announcement of competition winners.

Referring to numerous contacts with President Olcott, Zifer revealed, “I called him often, maybe too often. There was the hotel cancellation (conference hotel had been the Radisson) and the threat of an airline strike.”

Stephen L. Glover, the Award of Merit recipient, revealed some of the past of ITG, “In ’96, Michael Anderson (current web site director) wanted more web site involvement. We exploded onto the Internet world.” Glover was recognized for his contribution not just to ITG but to the entire world of brass publications. He asserted that one of the proudest days of his life occurred when he compiled, edited, printed, stamped, and sent the first Newsletter that would eventually grow into this current organization.

President Olcott presented Zifer with a host plaque. The outgoing host graciously accepted and thanked multitudes, including “my great teacher and friend, Jim West.”

Zifer surprised next year’s host, Murray Greig, by calling him to the podium and presenting him with an engraved bugle. Explaining that the bugle was to be a new tradition, handed down from outgoing to upcoming host, Zifer presented the bugle to Greig as he said, with relief, “Tag! You’re it!” The 2002 ITG Conference will be in Manchester England at the Royal Northern College of Music from July 2 to 6. Grieg invited one and all to attend!

President Olcott acknowledged all the past presidents who were in attendance and spoke of the long, proud heritage of ITG since its infancy. The ITG president from Miami University (Ohio) explained how many of the events were made possible by industry representatives and thanked these music companies. Olcott, as outgoing president, also spoke about incoming president Vince DiMartino, who is a past president and past conference host. As torrential rain pounded the roof of the hall, Olcott adjourned the banquet as members headed to the nearby auditorium and the final concert showcasing Allen Vizzuti.
