Recital: Pasi Pirinen Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Ezra Adams, Reviewer
Pasi Pirinen is currently the principal trumpet with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He was named the 1999 "Brass Player of the Year" at the Lieksa Brass Festival in Finland, and was the winner of the Ellsworth Smith Solo Trumpet Competition in 1998. His accomplishments and reputation were enough to create an exciting atmosphere at the beginning of his recital.
Pirinen began his recital with a transcription of Ravel's Piece en forme de Habanera for trumpet and piano. He contributed a new dimension of interpretation to this popular transcription with his ease of playing and his deliberate, controlled approach to the work.
Pirinen selected the Sonata by Harri Wessmann as his next work. His intimacy with the work was no surprise, as he had previously performed the world premiere of Wessman's trumpet concerto. It seemed throughout the work that Pirinen was painting a picture with his sound as a master artist, with careful strokes and subtle color changes through mute changes, clear articulation, and encompassing tone.
After a brief intermission, Pirinen began the second half of the recital with the Enesco Legende. He demonstrated gentleness with the technical facility of the piece that hid the difficulty well.
The anticipated Sonata by Peter Maxwell Davies was a demonstration of undeniably brilliant playing. Pirinen showed complete technical and musical mastery of the instrument while performing one of the most demanding works of the trumpet repertoire. His accompanist, Jouko Laivvori, was phenomenal in the duet role of the sonata.
Pirinen concluded his recital with an enjoyable rendition of the Slavonic Fantasy for Cornet by Carl Höhne. (Ezra Adams, instructor of trumpet, Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, TN) |
