Prelude: Conservatoire Nationale Supérior de Musique de Lyons Trumpet Ensemble Directors: Pierre Dutot and André Henry Wednesday, May 24, 2000 8:00 p.m.
In many ways, one should anticipate the finest performances at an ITG conference. It is a collection of many of the world's foremost artists and teachers. Expectations are high and fortunately, the majority of performances do not disappoint even the most critical listeners.
The prelude performed by the Conservatoire Nationale Supérior de Musique de Lyons, under the direction of Pierre Dutot and André Henry, not only met the expectations of the audience, but far exceeded them. Listening to this group performing is beyond what can be described in a review. It is something that one truly has to experience individually. Stocked with many solid young performers, led by major contest winner David Guerrier, this group is an example of intrinsic musicality, perfect intonation, unmistakably efficient embouchures, and extreme attention to detail. Much credit should be awarded to the teachers and directors, but these students have developed their gifts with seriousness and dedication. The three works performed were Ceremonial by André Telman, Escapade by Jérome Naulais, and Ciao dino by Gilles Herbillon. The difficulty of these works posed no obstacle to the amazing young musicians. While an attempt has been made here to describe the power and intensity of this fine ensemble, it is my hope that ITG members will be able to hear them in person at a future conference.
