Competition: Mock Orchestra Audition Thursday at 8:30 a.m. Ezra Adams, Reviewer
The winner of the 2000 International Trumpet Guild Mock Orchestra Audition Competition was Justin Emerich, student of Richard Stoelzel at the Harid Conservatory. The second place winner was Joshua MacCluer, a 1998 Oberlin Conservatory graduate, former student of Bill Lucas and currently with the Florida West Coast Symphony. The third place winner was Dorival Puccini, Jr., also a student of Richard Stoelzel at the Harid Conservatory. Emerich received a cash award of $1,000 for winning first place; MacCluer, $500; and Puccini, $300.
The contestants were asked to perform (in this order): Tschaikowsky, Symphony No. 4, first movement, m. 7-15 and fourth movement, nine measures after letter A to letter B; Wagner, Parsifal Prelude, two opening passages; Mahler, Symphony No. 5, rehearsal 7 to 8 and rehearsal 13 (pickups) to 14; Ravel, Piano Concerto, rehearsal 2 to 3; Strauss, Don Juan, nine before rehearsal I to five before rehearsal K. The contestants were also asked to perform J.S. Bach, Gloria from Mass in B minor, m.1-25, at any place in the audition order. Each contestant also sightread from the first movement of Shostakovitch's Piano Concerto. All of the performers played with the brilliance and musical expression expected from an international competition.
Immediately following the performance, each judge took time with each contestant to offer praise, encouragement, and ideas about their performance. This time of one-on-one meeting was of much enjoyment to the judges and contestants, and is a great illustration of the pedagogical value of the competition. Each judge and contestant expressed great satisfaction with the quality of the performances and the professional manner of the competition.
Cathy Leach, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, was the competition chair. The preliminary round (eighteen tapes submitted) was judged by Michael Bowman, principal trumpet, Grand Rapids Symphony; James Darling, fourth trumpet, Cleveland Orchestra; and Charles Decker, professor of trumpet, Tennessee Technological University. The judges for the final round were Frank Kaderabek, principal trumpet, Philadelphia Orchestra, retired; Amy Gilreath, professor of trumpet, Illinois State University; and Pasi Pirinen, principal trumpet, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and 1998 winner, Ellsworth Smith trumpet competition.
