Recital: Pierre Dutot/Graham Ashton
Thursday 2:00pm
Reviewer, Jon Burgess

Pierre Dutot and Graham Ashton presented a recital of Baroque works for two trumpets and organ. Pierre Dutot is professor of trumpet at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon. Graham Ashton, conference host, is professor of trumpet at Purchase Conservatory of Music.

Dutot and Ashton performed from the organ loft located on the side of the recital hall so it was difficult to see the performers, however when the music started it made little difference. The opening three works, the Sonata in D by Jacchini, Concerto in C by Vivaldi, and the Manfredini Concerto in D, featured brilliant piccolo playing by performers Dutot and Ashton. Even though Ashton was performing on a rotary piccolo and Dutot on a piston piccolo it was impossible to hear any difference as their perfectly matched sounds filled the hall. The combination of impeccable accuracy, rhythmic security, excellent intonation and musically inspired ornaments resulted in an outstanding recital. Also noticeable throughout each piece of the recital was the ease of dynamic contrasts each performer was able to execute.

Two of the highlights of the recital were Ashton's arrangement of Suite from "Watermusic" by Handel, and Dutot's arrangement of Mouret's Suite in D.  The enthusiastic applause forced Ashton and Dutot to return and repeat the first movement of the Mouret.
