Jazz Club: Jam Session
Hosted by
John Sneider
Thursday, May 25 10:00 p.m.
Joseph Bowman, Reviewer

John Sneider, winner of the 1998 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition, hosted the Thursday evening Jazz Club Jam Session in the Purchase Performing Arts Center Black Box. Sneider was assisted by Todd Coolman, bass; Charles Blenzig, piano; Chad Monroe, guitar; and Jason Anderson, drums. The group opened the set with Dave Brubeck's In Your Own Sweet Way, which featured Sneider's incredible jazz solo chops. The group followed with You Stepped Out of a Dream and I Thought About You.

After a five-minute intermission, trumpet players from the audience joined the rhythm section. Omar Butler (New York, NY), Josh Aguiar (Bloomington, IN), and George Schwartz (Boca Raton, FL) took solo choruses on Billy's Bounce. The end of the tune featured all three soloists trading four measure solos, which drew an appreciative response from the audience. Next, Al Guralick (Vancouver, B.C.), Richard Boulger (Bronx, NY) and Mitch Martin (Virginia Beach, VA) soloed on All the Things You Are. The next tune, Blue Monk, featured Al Hood (Denver, CO), Tom Parmerter (Rochester, NY), and John Coulton (Bridgeman, Australia). Rounding out the evening, guest clinician Terell Stafford (New Jersey), joined John Sneider and Scott Holbert (Hanovor, MD) on Autumn Leaves. The audience showed their appreciation for the wonderful interplay between the fine soloists and the responsive rhythm section. (Joseph Bowman, D.M.A. student, Arizona State University)
