ITG Solo Competition Saturday at 8:30am Jon Burgess, Reviewer
The first place winner in the 2000 ITG Solo Competition was David Guerrier student of Pierre Dutot at the Conservatoire National Superior de Musique, Lyon, France. The judges declared a tie for second place, presenting the award to Justin Emerich, a student of Richard Stoelzel at the Harid Conservatory, and Ashley Hall, student of Alan Siebert at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Guerrier received $1,000 as the first place winner. Emerich and Hall each received $400 for the second place award.
Each finalist was asked to perform the Bloch Proclamation as well as a solo of their choice. Hall performed first, beginning with the Bloch and then a memorized presentation of the Arutunian Concerto. Emerich began with the Bloch and then selected Jolivet's Concerto No. 2. Guerrier began with a memorized performance of the Haydn Concerto in E flat on the B-flat trumpet, ending with the Bloch. Each soloist gave strong performances on both the required piece and their individual solos.
Amy Gilreath, Illinois State University, was chair of the solo competition. The preliminary round judges were Bruce Briney, Western Illinois University; Rich Illman, Michigan State University; and Mark Ponzo, Northern Illinois University. The final round judges were Konradin Groth, Hochschule der Künste; Ray Crisara, University of Texas; and Cathy Leach, University of Tennessee.
