Jazz Club: All Stars with Jon Faddis Saturday, May 27 10:00 p.m. Joseph Bowman, Reviewer
Jon Faddis wrapped up a star-studded conference by hosting the last jam session. He was assisted by the Purchase College jazz faculty with Todd Coolman, bass; Charles Blenzig, piano; Jason Anderson, drums; and Doug Moore, guitar. Faddis began the program with Hot House. He continued with the standard Black Orpheus followed by the Dizzy Gillespie tune Tintindeo.
Faddis brought up John Sneider, his student Bruce Harris, and Mitch Martin for Clifford Brown's Joy Spring. The final selection of the evening, Lester Leaps In, featured Faddis, Sneider, Harris, Joe Auty, Philip Lassiter (the 2000 ITG Jazz Improvisation Competition winner), and Vaughn Nark. Faddis and Nark dueled on high notes while trading licks. The audience judged it a draw. The evening drew to a close with a Faddis wishing everyone well and thanking the audience for making ITG 2000 so successful. (Joseph Bowman, D.M.A. student, Arizona State University) |
