Seminar: "Trumpeters of Kiev -
Past and Present,"
Valery Posvaliuk
Friday, 5:15pm
Kimberly Stephans, Reviewer

As a prelude to the seminar, Laurie Frink, Leonard Candelaria, Bill Pfund, Kim Dunnick, and Valery Posvaliuk performed a new work by Alexandre Korsh. This piece, entitled Mini-suite on themes of the Ukrainian songs and dances and dedicated to the ITG Conference 2000, is an exciting trumpet quintet filled with beautiful Ukranian melodies, and passages loaded with flashy technical demands.

Valery Posvaliuk, a respected and accomplished performer and teacher in the Ukraine, spoke at length about the history of trumpet playing in Kiev and the Ukraine. He has authored several articles, including one by the same title as this lecture, "Trumpeters of Kiev Past and Present." This article is available through Sheet Music Service of Portland.

This seminar on the trumpeters of Kiev was a very interesting lecture, given in Russian and translated throughout the talk. The history, lineages, pedagogical techniques and concepts of the great trumpet players and teachers in the Ukraine were given and discussed, beginning in the 19th century and continuing into the modern era. Posvaliuk also played several recordings of some of the significant players from this tradition. However, there were many names given, and while the translator did a very good job with on-the-spot translation, it was not always easy to follow, which made full comprehension of the history and contributions of the Kiev trumpeters difficult.

In short, however, it can safely be said that the history and traditions of the trumpet players of the Ukraine, and of Kiev specifically, are as significant and rich as those of any other European country. For those interested in learning more, Posvaliuk's articles may well be the best starting place. (Kimberly Stephans, M.M. student, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana)
