William Vacchiano was born in Portland, Maine on May 23, 1912. During
his four years in Portland High School, he played in the Portland
Symphony (founded 1914) which is now one of the oldest orchestras in
the U.S.
Mr. Vacchiano entered the Institute of Musical Arts in New York (later to become
the Juilliard School of Music) in 1931, where he studied with the renowned
Max Schlossberg until 1933. In 1935, Mr. Vacchiano was appointed principal
trumpet of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra where he remained until 1973.
Globally renowned for his skills as a teacher, and for those who have studied
with him, Mr. Vacchiano was first appointed to the faculties of Juilliard,
Manhattan and Mannes Schools of Music in 1935. In the years to follow, he
taught and trained young trumpeters from all over the world, many of whom have held positions in major
orchestras. Mr. Vacchiano remains a faculty member at the Juilliard School of Music with over 65 years of
service.
William Vacchiano resides in Queens, New York. He married his Juilliard schoolmate, Josephine La
Prade, a piano major and had two children, Ralph and Joann.
