One of North America’s leading natural trumpet players, John Thiessen performs
regularly with period instrument ensembles throughout the US and
Canada. This season, he appears as soloist and principal trumpet for several
J.S. Bach anniversary performances, including B Minor Mass with Tafelmusik and
Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Easter Oratorio with New York Collegium, Orchestral
Suites and “Jauchzet Gott in alien Landen” with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra,
Christmas and Ascension Oratorios with San Francisco Magnificat Orchestra, and
concerts and recording of Brandenburg Concerto No 2 with Apollo’s Fire.
In addition,
Thiessen records and tours with Tafelmusik in Europe, performs Handel’s
Messiah with American Bach Soloists, Handel & Haydn Society, Los Angeles
Boys Choir and San Francisco Bach Choir, and appears as soloist with Baltimore’s
Pro Musica Rara. He has given masterclasses in the US and Canada, and recently served on the faculties of
the Baroque Performance Institute and Aston Magna. Thiessen has recorded for Sony Classical Vivarte, EMI,
BMG/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, London Decca, Denon and REM, and is heard on NPR and CBC broadcasts.
