David Sampson has emerged as one of the truly unique voices of his gen-eration
achieving rapidly growing attention from major orchestras,
soloists and ensembles. He is currently Composer-in-Residence with
the Colonial Symphony.
Recent and coming brass premieres include: Quintet 99, commissioned
by the American Brass Quintet; Serenade for flugelhorn & strings, com-missioned
by the Colonial Symphony; Triptych for trumpet & orchestra,
commissioned by the ITG and premiered by Raymond Mase at the Aspen
Music Festival; Three Portraits for tuba & orchestra commissioned by
Scott Mendoker; Westfield Fanfare commissioned by the Westfield
Symphony; Sonata Forty commissioned by Scott Brubaker and the IHS,
and Distant Voices commissioned by the American Brass Quintet.
Brass recordings include Morning Music (Meridian Arts Ensemble,
Channel Recordings); The Mysteries Remain and Solo (Raymond Mase, Summit Records); Morning Music
and Distant Voices (American Brass Quintet, Summit Records) and Reflections on a Dance (Summit Brass,
Summit Records).
David Sampson has received major grants from the NEA, American Academy of Arts & Letters, Barlow
Endowment, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Jerome Foundation, Cary Trust, and the Dodge
Foundation. He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, Hunter College, Manhattan School of
Music, and the Ecoles díArt Americaines. His teachers included Karel Husa, Henri Dutilleux and John
Corigliano in composition, and Gerard Schwarz, Gilbert Johnson, Robert Nagel & Raymond Mase in
trumpet.
