Formed in London 1991, the Graham Ashton
Brass Ensemble gave their début concert the
same year at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Since then, they have given concerts at festivals
and music societies in Europe, Scandinavia and
Australia and have appeared on BBC and ABC
Radios. GABE made their first recording,
“Renaissance Brass”, for Virgin Classics in 1992,
and have since recorded for Chandos and ABC
Classics.
In January this year, Graham reformed GABE in
New York, where he now resides. The ensemble’s
appearance in the Opening Ceremonies at ITG 2000, is their first in New York. Later this year, they will
give a concert at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, and tour Spain in January 2001. Future
concerts are planned in Australia, UK and France in 2001/2002.
Today’s performance by the Graham Ashton Brass Ensemble, is a tribute to the late Philip Jones OBE,
with whose ensemble Graham played for three years. The pieces are three of the most popular performed
by Philip’s “Tentet”. The late Ray Premru, who for many years was the bass trombone player with the
Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, wrote Divertimento. Ray was also bass trombonist with the Philharmonia
Orchestra of London, and latterly Professor of Trombone at Oberlin College. Chris Hazel, the composer
of Three Brass Cats, was the producer for PJBE recordings for Decca.
