The event has always featured a variety of activities, but in recent years it has become even more multifaceted and will include a brass symposium, a New Orleans-style street party called “Bayou and Brass,” a parade, a picnic on the lawn, a balloon race, a Kids Art Fest, the Great American Swing Dance, and the Great American Art Festival. For additional details, contact Artistic Director John Stroube ([email protected]) or check the festival website (http://www.gabbf.org).

May 31 – July 1, 2018: National Orchestral Institute Festival. Rehearsals, concerts, and recitals take place at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park, MD (USA). Acceptance requires a successful audition and selection to the orchestra. A full audition tour is planned. Those events, as well as details for the event and other information can be found on the festival website (http://www.noi.umd.edu).

June 1 – 30, 2018: 29th Orchestral Institute, to be held at the University of Houston (USA). The Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival (TMF) invites applications from college, graduate, and young professional players. TMF is housed in the outstanding facilities of the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, home of the sonically spectacular Moores Opera House. Created in 1971 by concert pianist James Dick, the Round Top Festival Institute offers six weeks (no absence is permitted) of intensive training for young talented musicians (born before December 31, 2000) seeking a transition from conservatories and universities to professional careers. The Round Top Festival Institute owns its campus (over 200 acres), venues (a 1,000-seat air-conditioned concert hall and 160-seat chapel), practice rooms, accommodations, food services, and other amenities (swimming pool, jogging trails, etc.). The Round Top Festival Institute offers to accepted young artists a full scholarship (worth $6,500) for tuition through the James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts. The relatively small number of participants (about 95) whose admission is based on auditions and recommendations and the fact that participants and faculty share the same campus create a collegial atmosphere through which a constant flow of stimulating exchanges enlightens everyone. Enrollment includes 28 violins, 10 violas, 10 cellos, 6 basses, 4 flutes, 4 oboes, 4 clarinets, 4 bassoons, 5 horns, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, 6 percussion, 2 harps, and 4 pianists.
