Welcome, Young Trumpet Enthusiasts! The "Ask The Teacher" column is designed to help young trumpet players discover the answers to questions they have about their instrument. Do you have a question about your embouchure? Want a few exercises to improve your breath control? Have some questions about the history of the trumpet, or a famous trumpet player? What suggestions about auditioning for college? This column is your opportunity to ask questions and have them answered by professionals in the field who have experience with your particular issues. E-mail your questions to Dr. Doug Wilson at asktheteacher@trumpetguild.org , and within a reasonable period of time, your questions will be posted with a response. Ask away! And don’t forget that you are playing the “Instrument of Kings”, so have fun with it! About the Editor: Douglas Wilson is widely known as a trumpet soloist, clinician, and music educator. He is a skilled musician in classical, commercial, and jazz idioms. Currently, he is a freelance musician and music educator in the Washington D.C. area. Dr. Wilson previously taught public schools in Oklahoma and most recently was the Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Director of Winds and Percussion at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK. His performing affiliations have included Principal Trumpet with the Tulsa Philharmonic, the Signature Symphony, and the Tulsa Ballet Theatre Orchestra, as well as the New Haven Symphony, Orchestra New England, Solisti New York, the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival Orchestra, and the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. Dr. Wilson received his Doctoral degree in Trumpet Performance from The University of Oklahoma School of Music. He holds the Bachelor of Music Education from Oral Roberts University and a Master of Music degree from Yale University. Wilson’s principal teachers include Dr. Jacob Larson and Robert Nagel, founder of the New York Brass Quintet. Douglas Wilson is a Yamaha Performing Artist/Clinician and performs on Yamaha trumpets.
